graphic design in TV and Film

Where we might use graphic design

Graphic design is used in every form of media distribution from movies to gaming, TV down to radio, newspapers and magazines. The biggest user of graphic design and designers is in the TV, film and gaming industry. The graphic designer typically works under the direction of the art director, and is responsible for producing visual and contextual content.

To create a world that is realistic the designer relays to the audience that the world they have created has substance. Writers, producers and directors will use graphic designers to come up with fictionalized media to show in that world. This would help to pull the viewer in and make it more real. Newspapers, magazine headlines, bill board adverts, and TV adverts also utilize design elements to grab the attention of the viewer. The use of serif or sans within text can convey to the reader the importance of the text, headlines in papers will often be without the serifs, making the headline easier to read.

Also you can find graphic design elements within special effects in a movie or set design, some elements become synonymous with franchises, the star trek logappears on the clothes and costumes the actors wear. This is then further carried through the advertising of the franchise itself.

All these add to the naturalness of the world they are creating making it more
believable and give the world a sense of realism. Design is rarely neglected in these forms of media, but sometimes it seems invisible because you assume that everything you see on a screen has been there forever. There is often a natural evolution to visual logos in these works that link several areas together.

What is Graphic Design?

What is Graphic Design?

Graphic Design is the planning and conveyance of contextual content that maybe be used for the communication of art and type imagery. These can be visual or physical and on any media format.  Graphic designers have used these forms to promote businesses, cultural, educational and political endeavours for over a hundred years.

The first of these was possibly the poster. The poster brought subject matter to the masses for example, important public notifications and wanted posters. As the posters evolved it gave people the chance to advertise and notify the general population of products and events that might not have been accessible by any other means. In the early days a lot of the population could not read so image type posters were used to communicate the subject matter. Although technological advancements have moved on in the world of media, the poster is still used today in much the same way and is a vital graphic design tool in communicating movies, cosmetic products and public information posters to name just a few.

In modern times big business use these graphic design tools to their full advantage. The use of graphic designers to define their brand and help promote them through advertising campaigns is a daily occurrence.  The most common use of graphic design in modern day is the ‘logo’; this is evident in everything we buy as consumers. The goal behind a logo is to bring the businesses identity to the forefront of the public eye and keep it there creating a relationship between the business and the consumer. The strategy is to make the logo trustworthy, friendly, fashionable, memorable and relevant. Graphic designers and marketing companies collaborate to generate a brand that you can trust and is recognisable all over the world. For example if you are hungry and in any major town or city your first thought will  probably be that of McDonalds, Burger King, or K.F.C. these are often associated with cheap affordable fast food meals and are the most common restaurants. But you remember them because they are engrained in our psyche due to the advertising campaigns.

Here is an example of a few big businesses that use the logo to promote their business:-
